CAULFIELD trainer Tony Vasil will contemplate a South Australia Derby (2400m) run with Liberty Leader following his impressive win in the $100,000 Listed Schweppes Tasmanian Derby (2200m) at Elwick yesterday.
Liberty Leader ($7.50), settled back in the field and was given plenty of time to find his feet following a solid tempo set by fellow Victorian gallopers Rainbow Storm and Irish Medley before working into the race boldly at the top of the straight.
He eventually ground down race favourite Rainbow Storm ($1.40), while the local Varian finished powerfully for third and appears to have a huge future in the staying ranks.
Rainbow Storm (Brad Rawiller) was given no peace in front, however the ride by Jack Hill aboard the winner was worth an 11 out of 10.
Vasil is likely to send Liberty Leader (Statue Of Liberty-Umaris) to Adelaide on May 3, to take on some of Australia's best three-year-olds in the $500,000 Group One.
"He's lightly raced, sound and a stayer on the way up," Vasil said.
"It looks like there won't be a bother with him getting the distance and why not have a go, they are only a three-year-old once.
"I must thank David and Scott Brunton who have looked after this horse since he arrived and what can I say about the jockey [Jack Hill]?
"I have been saying for a while that he's the most improved jockey in Victoria."
Most of Liberty Leader's owners travelled from Victoria to the Elwick track and witnessed one of their biggest thrills in racing.
But syndicate manager Dean Humphries couldn't make the trip. "It is pleasing to get the result for all the owners and especially for syndicate manager Dean Humphries," Vasil said.
"He [Humphries] has had a bit of bad luck lately and watched the race from home.
"But hopefully the win will lift his spirits."
Hill said Liberty Leader was suited at 2400m.
"I popped off the fence at the half mile and got going," he said.
"And from that point, I knew he would be in the finish.
"He's an extremely exciting horse.
"And he will eventually get over more ground."
