BRISBANE February 5 AAP - Rival jockey Chris Munce was left stunned when former Kiwi galloper King Halo sailed past him to win at Doomben on Wednesday.
King Halo, who started the $2 favourite, gave Munce's mount San Clemente ($3.70) about seven lengths start from the 600m and beat him by two lengths in the Yellow Glen Hcp (1350m).
"My horse didn't stop and was going strongly to the line. The winner just went straight past me. He must be pretty smart," Munce said.
Winning jockey Michael Cahill agreed and said King Halo was a horse with a real future and much better than Wednesday class.
Trainer Liam Birchley picked up three-year-old King Halo, who is by staying sire Shinko King, for $10,000 at a sale in New Zealand's South Island.
"He was very immature. I am tempted to spell him now but I might try him over a bit more ground before a break," Birchley said.
King Halo ran 1.20.1 which was nearly two seconds faster than the other maiden heat and faster than the two Benchmark 70 race winners Pasquinel and Gallinari.
Apprentice Maja Vance can now only claim 1.5 kgs after she outrode her 2kgs allowance when Gallinari ($4) won the Sky Racing Hcp (1350m).
Vance, who is riding under stays on two suspensions, handled Gallinari to perfection.
Trainer Bryan Dais said Gallinari had probably been unlucky in 19 of her 24 starts.
"She is a Saturday class mare and that is where we are heading with her," he said.
Pasinquel, who started at $1.70, is also headed to Saturday class after continuing trainer Steve O'Dea's recent good run by winning the Glenlogan Park Hcp (1350m).
It was a family affair for O'Dea as his sister races Pacquinel who has won four races.
Pacquinel is being set for a 1500m race at the Eagle Farm Saturday meeting on February 22.
