Mick Price and Craig Newitt are poised to feature heavily in Melbourne's major sprint races after Lankan Rupee scored a dominant first-up win at Caulfield.
They already have star mare Samaready in their corner as she heads towards Saturday's Group One Lightning Stakes.
And Lankan Rupee made the right impression in Saturday's Group Two Rubiton Stakes (1100m) to suggest he'll take some catching in the Oakleigh Plate in two weeks.
A gelding operation before Lankan Rupee's spring campaign has turned the four-year-old into a consistent stakes performer.
His all-the-way 3-3/4 length Rubiton Stakes win was his third black-type success in his past three starts.
Sent out the $2.90 favourite, Lankan Rupee bounced to the front, cruised along under Newitt and was never headed as he sprinted clear to defeat three-year-old Iconic ($16) with a half neck to First Command ($26) in third.
"He only had one trial leading into today and hasn't been screwed down to win first-up. But that's just the type of horse he is," Price said.
"I think there's good improvement in him to come."
Three of Melbourne's Group One sprints in the late summer-early autumn are on the agenda for Lankan Rupee starting with the Oakleigh Plate where Price believes he'll be a live chance.
Newitt agrees.
"He's just furnished into a pretty serious racehorse now," Newitt said.
"He'll be thrown in the deep end next time and I'm sure he'll be hard to run down."
