BRISBANE Feb 8 AAP - The jockey was a late scratching with a stomach upset, the trainer had just recovered from the `flu but the horse was at his best when Flying Home won at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Flying Home ($7) earned himself a winter carnival campaign when he beat Anna Lizzie ($3.30) by a half head with Borehole ($11) third in the TJS Services Open Handicap (1600m).
Flying Home's trainer Barry Baldwin missed Wednesday's race meeting at Doomben with a `flu bug but was well enough to attend on Saturday.
Jockey Chris Munce was booked to ride Flying Home but was a late scratching when a stomach bug which ended his day on Wednesday flared again.
Munce stood down ill from the last two races at Doomben on Wednesday but was declared fit to ride by a doctor on Friday.
"Chris rode trackwork for me this morning and was fine to ride. But he rang a few hours later to say he had a stomach upset and couldn't ride," Baldwin said.
"So the trainer has been sick, the jockey is sick but luckily the horse is great."
He said Flying Home earned enough money with Saturday's win to qualify him for races such as the Ipswich Cup in the winter.
"I'm not saying he will contest the big races but there are plenty like Ipswich for him," Baldwin said.
Jim Byrne took over from Munce and said Flying Home had done a good job under 59kg.
Meanwhile, trainer Tony Gollan is waiting for news on whether his impressive winner Looks Like The Cat will be a winter carnival contender.
Looks Like The Cat, a $4 to $2.30 firmer, beat Vintage Bon ($5.50) by 1-3/4 lengths.
Hong Kong buyers have expressed interest in Looks Like The Cat and a decision will be made soon.
