Even Chinese dentists in Hong Kong can tell you how global the Melbourne Cup has become.
Brett Prebble has received many messages of support since riding Green Moon to a surprise win at Flemington on Tuesday, including one from the man he doesn't normally enjoy seeing.
"The reaction has been surprising," Prebble told reporters on Wednesday.
"I had an SMS from my dentist in Hong Kong. He's a Chinese fella from Hong Kong who knows that I've won the Melbourne Cup. It's become such a small world. This race is a world race, not just an Australian race."
The Hong Kong-based Victorian has even managed to soften the usually strict Hong Kong Jockey Club, which has allowed him to stay in Melbourne to enjoy his win and miss Wednesday night's Happy Valley meeting.
As he has on many occasions, Prebble would have normally flown straight back on Tuesday night in time for the Wednesday meeting.
"I was more than happy to go back and fulfil my engagements but I was keen to enjoy the moment and take it all in and they said they were happy to let others pick up my rides and let me stay," he said.
"I'll be flying back first thing in the morning. It's still short, but it's sweet."
He used his night in Melbourne for some respectably short, but sweet, celebrations.
"It's been a bit of a whirlwind. I was in bed by 12, the media was at my door at 6.30, so I had a little bit of sleep there," he said.
Even though he told his wife he'd win the Cup and had booked a flight for her, she opted to stay at home in Hong Kong with their two children, aged 10 and eight, who watched the race in the family lounge room "yelling and screaming and cheering".
But while he's had great support from the Hong Kong locals, Prebble doesn't expect any special treatment on Saturday when he saddles up for nine rides at Sha Tin.
"Their memories are very short there, you're as good as your last winner," he said.
After close to 10 years in Hong Kong, he plans to stay for the long haul, with the odd trip home, especially if it's for an Australian Cup or Cox Plate ride on Green Moon.
"I'd come back for any of the majors on him, he's good enough," Prebble said.
The whirlwind continued on Wednesday morning. After an early round of media commitments in Melbourne, a helicopter took him 65km north to owner Lloyd Williams' training property in Mt Macedon where Prebble reunited with Green Moon for an affectionate pat.
