Moment Of Change too strong in Futurity

Saturday 22 February 2014, 4:50pm

Moment Of Change continued his love affair with the Caulfield 1400-metre course with a bold front-running Group One win in the Futurity Stakes on Saturday.

But the race ended sadly for connections of resuming Victoria Derby winner Polanski which suffered a near-fore leg injury and was taken to a veterinary hospital.

"He's fractured his pastern. They are trying to save him," Polanski's trainer Robbie Laing said.

Moment Of Change ($3.20) went into the weight-for-age Futurity unbeaten from three starts over the course and distance and just like he had in the CF Orr Stakes two weeks earlier, the Peter Moody-trained gelding cruised along in front and couldn't be caught.

The five-year-old notched his third Group One win and will be given the chance to add another in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington next start, a race he was narrowly denied in last year.

"He is in peak form and this trip, this track, and the way it races suits him," Moody said.

"He goes strongly enough that horses have got to chase him from a long way out.

"Bull Point is probably a Group One three-year-old but he's chasing him from the 700-metre mark. They can't close when they are chasing from that far out."

Moody had pinpointed the Orr and Futurity as winnable Group Ones for Moment Of Change after he was narrowly beaten in the Winterbottom Stakes in Perth in November.

"It's nice to be right," Moody said.

Moment Of Change defeated the resuming Zipping Classic winner Sertorius ($26) by a long neck, with Pinwheel ($18) another three-quarters of a length away third.

Sertorius turned in an eye-catching run after missing the start by a couple of lengths.

"He ran a blinder," co-trainer Jamie Edwards said.

"It was disappointing he missed the start but after that he landed in a good spot and I don't think it made much difference to the end result.

Three-year-old Bull Point, the $2.35 favourite, was fourth.

Polanski settled second in the run but weakened from the home turn and finished a long last.
