A bleeding attack robbed Sweet Idea of the chance to compete against Guelph in the spring but she drew ahead on points in their first clash of the Sydney carnival.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained filly added the Group Two Light Fingers Stakes at Randwick on Saturday to her already impressive record while Guelph laboured into sixth place after being posted wide.

Guelph was the $2.20 favourite for Saturday's fillies feature with Sweet Idea second elect at $3.20.

While Guelph was posted four wide, Sweet Idea was in a much more comfortable position tracking Champagne Cath ($13) until the final stages when she stretched out and took control.

Sweet Idea held off the fast-finishing Gypsy Diamond by three-quarters of a length with Champagne Cath a long neck third.

"She has never run a bad race and has a bit of class about her," Gai Waterhouse stable spokesman Mark Newnham said.

"We are hoping she can go on now and win a Group One and the Coolmore is the likely target."

Sweet Idea's jockey Tommy Berry had not been on her back since August when she bled during her close second to Thump in the Silver Shadow Stakes.

Since her return from an automatic three-month ban, Sweet Idea won two restricted Magic Millions races on her way to the Light Fingers.

"I was waiting for Guelph because I knew she was on my outside," Berry said.

"I made it a test.

"It has taken me a long time to get back on her and I'm thrilled.

"She is one of the gutsiest fillies around and a bit underestimated."

Guelph's rider Hugh Bowman said it was not his intention to be where he was and it told in the end.

"On face value she was disappointing," he said.

"It was not the place to be."

Sweet Idea finished in front of Guelph the only other time they met in last year's Golden Slipper when they were third and fourth.
