NSW south coast trainer Shane Kember has been disqualified for 15 months for the administration of a banned substance to one of his horses and the possession of a device capable of inflicting cruelty.

Kember was given sentences of six months and nine months to be served concurrently after being found guilty of administering the product Eliminate, containing the diuretic ethacrynic acid, to Craig'n'ian before the horse was due to race on October 8 at Nowra.

The Racing NSW investigative unit found the substance when it inspected his stable in the morning and the horse was withdrawn after it returned a positive test.

Investigators also found an unapproved wire whip covered with electrical tape, commonly known as a jigger, in the trainer's tack room.

Kember was handed another six-month ban after being found guilty of a charge relating to the device.

He pleaded not guilty to the serious charges but admitted to failing to keep proper treatment records and possessing Eliminate for which he was fined $900.
