A two-year quest will end for jockey Craig Williams in Saturday's Group One George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill.

Williams will ride Irish-trained galloper Gordon Lord Byron at his Australian debut in the $1 million event.

Williams says he has suggested Australia as the perfect destination to Gordon Lord Byron's trainer Tom Hogan since 2012.

The introduction of `The Championships' concept and the accompanying prize money injection swayed Hogan to travel the Group One winner to Sydney.

"We have spoken to Tom in Hong Kong for the past two years to try and get him out here," Williams said.

"When they opened up The Championships, they sold themselves to Tom, especially with the extra prize money."

A heavy track will greet Gordon Lord Byron on Saturday but Williams drew confidence from a second to the retired French champion Moonlight Cloud in soft going at Longchamp last year.

However, Williams says Hogan would have preferred a firmer surface for the gelding.

Australia will be the sixth country in which the seasoned traveller Gordon Lord Byron has raced.

The TAB has Gordon Lord Byron at $23 in its George Ryder Stakes market and he is at $26 for the TJ Smith Stakes two weeks later.

Meanwhile, Williams will begin his latest stint in Japan at the conclusion of the Sydney autumn carnival.

The jockey has ridden regularly in Japan on short-term contracts since 2011.

Williams will ride at either Randwick or Sandown on April 26 before flying to Japan to begin a two-month term at the Group One Tenno Sho meeting at Kyoto on May 4.
