Dunn takes another step towards return

Friday 28 March 2014, 5:39pm

Dwayne Dunn is still uncertain when he will return to race riding despite completing another step in his comeback from injury.

Dunn succumbed to neck issues caused by a bulging disc in his back in December and returned to riding trackwork earlier this month.

The jockey rode Hawkes Racing-trained horses in three jumpouts at Flemington on Friday.

Dunn said he pulled up sore but he expected his body to require time to adjust to riding again.

"I didn't expect it to be an easy morning but I was happy enough with the way it went," Dunn said.

"It's taking time but I have been slowly increasing the pressure I put on myself."

Dunn combined with retired star All Too Hard in four Group One victories last season but says he is some time off being fit enough to rejoin the Melbourne riding ranks.

The jockey says he has embarked on an exercise program to build strength in his neck and back.

"I'm doing a lot of physio to strengthen the areas that have been letting me down," Dunn said.

"Hopefully it might hold together a bit better than it has in the past."

Dunn, who has so far avoided surgery, will travel to Euroa next week to ride work for trainer David Hayes at Lindsay Park.
