Wet track a query for Solicit in Vinery

Thursday 3 April 2014, 2:29pm

An Oaks berth is on the autumn agenda for Solicit but her performance in Saturday's Group One Vinery Stud Stakes will determine which classic she contests.

Solicit ran third in the Victorian Oaks in the spring, prompting trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra to set her for the ATC Oaks.

However, Sydney's weather will have a bearing on whether Solicit presses on to the fillies feature at Randwick on April 19.

Solicit is almost certain to race on a wet track in the Vinery Stud Stakes and while she won her maiden on slow ground at Ballarat, Ellerton is unsure whether the filly will be as effective in the conditions at Group One level.

Ellerton says connections could switch plans if Solicit struggles to handle a wet track at Rosehill.

"If it happened to be really wet and she didn't handle it we could come back and go to Adelaide for the Australasian Oaks," Ellerton said.

Ellerton and Zahra also nominated Solicit for the VOBIS Gold Reef (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday but did not accept after determining to give her a chance in Sydney.

Zahra said Solicit worked strongly on the steeple grass at Flemington on Tuesday morning which followed a trip to Werribee last Saturday.

"We galloped her with a mate at Werribee to get her out of the stable and somewhere different," Zahra said.

"Her work has been really good so we're keen to run her against the best.

"We want to know where she's at."

Cranbourne trainer Mick Kent says he has no fears about the soft ground for his Vinery Stud Stakes contender Marianne.

Marianne defeated Solicit in the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley last time out and Kent said the soft ground and distance rise would suit his filly.

"I have been dying to give her a sit and let her relax," Kent said.

"The 10 furlongs (2000m) gives her a chance to sit and sprint."

Craig Williams will ride Marianne while Chad Schofield will take over from Damian Lane aboard Solicit.

Solicit is a $5 equal favourite with Rising Romance and Zanbagh in Vinery Stud Stakes betting while Marianne is a $13 chance.
