Law out to prove Martin top Slipper judge

Thursday 3 April 2014, 2:39pm

Her sixth Golden Slipper runner in seven years might not be Denise Martin's best but it will be one of significance for the racehorse syndicator.

Law will carry the colours of Martin's Star Thoroughbreds, bringing to an end a Golden Slipper era between herself and trainer Gai Waterhouse.

Chris Waller will train next season's two-year-olds for Star Thoroughbreds and Martin has thoughts of sharing a winning farewell with Waterhouse despite Law being rated an outsider.

"It's pretty remarkable that a Breeders' Plate winner is a 50-1 chance ... he seems to be forgotten in dispatches," she said of the colt.

Law is following a lead-up template not unlike the one that delivered Star Thoroughbreds and Waterhouse the 2008 Golden Slipper with Sebring.

The colt will go into the Slipper having not raced for 33 days.

"With Sebring we were forced to go that way because he had a temperature and had to be treated so the cards were dealt," Martin said.

"It was not a case of wanting to but we had to."

There have been no such health concerns for Law since he ran unplaced behind Mossfun in the Silver Slipper.

"Gai is completely comfortable giving two-year-olds an extended break between runs," Martin said.

"Law is a fairly uncomplicated individual who just gets on with the job.

"I think he's going to be an outstanding three-year-old but he's got a tremendous each-way chance on Saturday."
