Zabeelionaire out to bounce back to form

Friday 4 April 2014, 12:57pm

As frustrating as it might have been, trainer Leon Corstens could still see the funny side when a downpour hit Bendigo before the recent Golden Mile.

Zabeelionaire has a dislike for wet tracks but to the frustration of his trainer, he keeps finding them.

The storm delayed the Bendigo races for an hour mid-meeting before the Listed Golden Mile was run on a slow track and Zabeelionaire finished 12th.

"I just looked at the horse and thought `you've done it again'", Corstens said.

"It was just bad luck and that's the way it goes.

"I think the horse is going really well and I've been pleased with his work since."

Zabeelionaire, the 2012 South Australian Derby winner, is scheduled to run in Saturday's Community Raceday Handicap (2000m) at Flemington.

"He's definitely running if we don't get a wet track," Corstens said.

"(But) I think he's a drought breaker."

Corstens scratched Zabeelionaire from a couple of races during last year's winter carnival in Queensland because of wet ground and also aborted an early spring campaign.

Zabeelionaire hasn't won since the SA Derby in May 2012, and Corstens said his aim this time around was simple.

"At this point all I'd like to do is regain his form and win a couple of races," Corstens said.

Zabeelionaire, with Michael Rodd to ride, was a $21 chance on Friday with the Darren Weir-trained Akzar the $3.30 favourite to win his fourth race in a row.

Flemington was rated in the dead range on Friday.
