Pateman promises to address weight issues

Star jumps jockey Steven Pateman expects to sort out his weight problems in time for next week's three-day Warrnambool jumps carnival.

Pateman's troubles began when Victorian stewards banned him from accepting rides below 67.5kg after the jockey committed his 32nd weight-related offence when he gave up the mount on Palmero at Sandown earlier this month.

Pateman reunited with Palmero to win last Saturday's Von Doussa Steeplechase at Oakbank with 68kg but South Australian stewards stopped him from riding the eventual winner Lord Of The Song in Monday's Great Eastern Steeplechase at 67kg.

Pateman said he thought the South Australian stewards were about to let him ride Lord Of The Song but Victorian stewards convinced them otherwise.

"I felt not letting me ride when my weight was good on Monday was not helping me at all," Pateman told radio station RSN.

"My weight was really good during the week and I worked really hard to get down to that weight so it was frustrating."

The leading rider said he now has his weight under control after working with sports dieticians who will provide a report to Victorian stewards later this week to determine a safe minimum riding weight for Pateman.

A candid Pateman acknowledged he needed to change his lifestyle to avoid weight-related issues but vowed to address the problem.

"My record is terrible and I've let a lot of people down over the years, including myself," Pateman said.

"I'm ready to do things right this time and I'm grateful they (stewards) are concerned for me and want to help me out.

"We'll sort it out during the week and head to Warrnambool fit and ready to go."

The 31-year-old Pateman said he wanted to ride for another "nine or ten years" before taking up training but he had unfinished business before retiring.
