Scott Aspery celebrates milestone success

Saturday 26 April 2014, 5:22pm

Scott Aspery produced a training masterstroke when Estonian Princess relished a drop in distance to score a last-stride Group Three win at Randwick.

Her victory in the James HB Carr Stakes gave Aspery his first Saturday metropolitan winner, and his maiden stakes success, although it didn't come without a few anxious moments.

"I was concerned early on, I didn't expect her to be back last," Aspery said.

"I told Brenton (Avdulla) to put her where she was comfortable and relaxed and then get to the outside and sprint once she got to the rise, which she did."

Estonian Princess ($17) arrived just in time to deny favourite Northern Glory ($3.60) by a nose with Lady Lakshmi ($11) kicking back strongly for third another short head away.

The winner had finished midfield over 2000m in the Adrian Knox Stakes just two weeks ago but Aspery was able to produce her in sharp enough condition to cope with 1400m on Saturday.

He will now consider backing her up in next weekend's Hawkesbury Guineas.

"She didn't run the 2000 metres so I dropped her back in distance. It's fantastic. She showed seven furlongs is just right for her," Aspery said.

"If she pulls up well she might go to the Hawkesbury Guineas next week."

A Brisbane winter carnival campaign will also be weighed up for the filly with Aspery nominating the Queensland Guineas as a likely target.
