Mornington trainer Jason Warren has put his hand up to join the powerful Caulfield training ranks.

Leading trainers Mick Price, Peter Moody and Robert Smerdon are among those who prepare horses out of Caulfield stables.

The imminent retirement of long-time Caulfield trainer Rick Hore-Lacy will leave an on-course stable block available.

Warren trains horses at Denistoun Park on the Mornington Peninsula but would split his team between that property and the city if he secured Hore-Lacy's boxes.

"Denistoun Park is an unbelievable set-up but Caulfield will be a great fit for us," Warren said.

Warren, the trainer of top galloper Bel Sprinter, said weekly jump-outs at Caulfield were preferable to transporting horses to the Mornington and Balnarring racecourses for trials.

The trainer said the timing of any move remained up in the air because Hore-Lacy has not set a retirement date.

"It's up to Rick as far as when he feels comfortable retiring," Warren said.

"If it happens, it might happen around June or July."

The Melbourne Racing Club will decide which trainer will move into into Hore-Lacy's stables after the 74-year-old horseman retires.
