Two-year-old Petrology is set for a rematch with his last-start conqueror and trainer David Hayes rates him a realistic chance of turning the tables.
The Mick Price-trained Pressing finished strongly on debut at Caulfield three weeks ago to beat Petrology by a neck and is favourite to win again in Saturday's Listed Sky High Mt Dandenong Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield over the same distance.
Pressing is at $3.30 ahead of Petrology at $4 but Hayes is hopeful his charge can go one better than last time and confirm spring plans.
"As impressive as Mick's horse was, I think we're a chance for sure," Hayes said.
Petrology, a winner on debut at Mornington before his runner-up finish at Caulfield, is a three-quarter brother to Group One winner Aqua D'Amore and can earn a crack at feature spring three-year-old races if he performs strongly.
"I think he's going to be pretty competitive," Hayes said.
"He only just got beaten last start, and I think he's a bit better than he was last time."
Petrology was ridden by Jake Noonan for the first time last start and he retains the ride.
Hayes expects the jockey's experience on the horse last start to be a benefit.
"I thought he got there (to the front) a bit early last start. And Jake knows him now," Hayes said.
Price scratched Pressing from last Friday's Listed Anzac Day Stakes after he drew a wide barrier to save him for Saturday's assignment.
Peter Moody's two representatives, Easy Drama and Armada, were also scratched from the Anzac Day Stakes because of wide draws.
Armada was third to Pressing and Petrology on debut while Easy Drama was a Flemington winner in his first start.
