Amexed is poised to give trainer Tony Gollan his first runner in a Queensland Derby after his boilover win in the Rough Habit Plate at Doomben on Saturday.
Emerging from a Sunshine Coast win at his previous start, Amexed ($16) handled the jump to Group Three company with ease when he edged out New Zealand filly Telepathic ($4.60) to win by a long neck.
"I've never had a Derby runner before but he's a very promising three-year-old," Gollan said.
"With these well-bred horses you throw them in the deep end and he swam really well today."
Gollan said there is still plenty of upside with Amexed.
"He was only third-up over 2000 metres today so there's plenty of improvement in him yet," he said.
"The Grand Prix here in a fortnight will top him perfectly for the Derby."
Winning jockey Michael Rodd was concerned when Telepathic loomed up in the straight but was impressed with the fight shown by Amexed.
"Although he's not overly big, he really covers the ground beautifully and switches off during a race," he said.
"He was able to accelerate through the gaps and when the New Zealand filly came up on my outside in the straight I was worried there for a little bit but he really wanted to win.
"I gave him a couple of reminders and he showed me today he's definitely a Derby contender."
Trainer Donna Logan was delighted with Telepathic and will weigh up her options with the filly.
"We'll talk things over when we get home and see if we wait three weeks for the Queensland Oaks or run her in the Grand Prix in a fortnight," she said.
"Her run peaked about 100 metres from the finish but that will tighten her up no end."
Glorious Lad also pleased trainer Shaune Ritchie with his effort to finish third.
"He was held up momentarily but whether that cost him too much ground I'm not really sure," Ritchie said.
"He never runs a bad race. He's a good honest horse and a pleasure to have in the stable."
