Resurgent Victorian stayer Akzar has galloped right-handed at Warrnambool in preparation for his trip to Brisbane for the Group One Doomben Cup.
Beach work at Warrnambool has propelled Akzar from an also-ran in a Traralgon Cup to a Group One hopeful in the space of six starts and the seven-year-old hit the track on Monday for his final work-out for Saturday's race.
Weir's racing manager Jeremy Rogers said Akzar's race rider Brad Rawiller partnered the gelding in a pleasing hit-out over a lap of the Warrnambool course proper.
Rogers said Akzar would join the Mick Price-trained duo Pressing and Jazz Song on a flight to Brisbane early on Wednesday and the import would continue his beach routine in Queensland.
"He will stay at Liam Birchley's stable and Nudgee beach is just up the road so I would think it wouldn't be a problem for him," Rogers said.
"If he goes up Wednesday, then he'll only trot and canter for a couple of days and there won't be much to do with him."
Akzar is one of 13 horses still in contention for the Doomben Cup along with the Peter Moody-trained trio Fat Al, Floria and Kitten On The Run.
Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller also has three Doomben Cup entrants with Junoob, Moriarty and three-year-old Vilanova nominated for the $500,000 contest.
The Hawkes Racing-trained Leebaz is the $3.70 favourite in the TAB's latest market ahead of Streama and Akzar at $4 and $4.60 respectively.
Meanwhile, Rogers said Group Two winner Lonhspresso emerged unscathed from her unplaced first-up run at Flemington on Saturday.
Stewards reported Lonhspresso pulled up lame when fourth to the Mick Price-trained General Peekay but Rogers said the mare recovered quickly from the race.
Rogers said Lonhspresso would return to Flemington to run in a Listed race over 1100m on May 24.
