Rebel Dane has passed his latest test with flying colours, restoring his trainer's confidence he can bounce back from a last-start disappointment.
Gary Portelli was pleased with what he saw in a 1030m barrier trial on Monday when Rebel Dane went round at Rosehill wearing a crossover nose band.
Portelli said it was only a subtle gear change but one he hoped would reap rewards in the Doomben 10,000 later this month following Rebel Dane's fifth in the All Aged Stakes.
He started favourite in the final Group One of the Sydney autumn carnival following his second to star sprinter Lankan Rupee in the TJ Smith Stakes on a heavy track.
Lankan Rupee's performance cemented his position at the top of the international sprint ratings but appeared to take a toll on those behind him including Rebel Dane and third placed Buffering who was the odds-on favourite when third again in Saturday's BTC Cup.
"Rebel Dane always wears a nose band and the crossover one just adds another piece which keeps a horse's mouth closed so it doesn't pull," Portelli said.
"If we happened to draw wide in the 10,000 then it's just an extra benefit. We can't take the chance and hope for a good barrier because once we say what gear he has we can't change.
"He settled beautifully this morning for Kerrin McEvoy who quickened him up along the fence and then let him coast to the line in second place.
"I'm happy with him and although a few horses have gone backwards after the TJ I'm sure he can bounce back."
Rebel Dane and Buffering are the $4 equal favourites for the Doomben 10,000.
Portelli has less ambitious targets for Single Style but believes the mare can also bounce back from a last-start disappointment when she was fifth in a 1200m race at Randwick.
A stakes-winning two-year-old, Single Style is entered for the Listed Juanmo Quality (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.
"There are some nice mares' races up there for her over the next few weeks and I think she has a win in her this preparation," Portelli said.
