Conners sets sights on second sprint crown

A failed shot at motherhood could provide a belated blessing for connections of Satin Shoes when she bids to defend her Ortensia Stakes crown at Saturday's stand-alone Scone meeting.

The race has attracted 12 sprinters including Group One-placed Aeronautical, topweight with 59.5kg, along with the evergreen Zaratone and last-start winners Unanimously and Kneeling.

Satin Shoes heads to Scone following a two-start campaign in Adelaide which ended with her down-the-track effort in the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes.

It has been an unexpected preparation for the five-year-old who was retired after being galloped on in a Brisbane race last year.

She was put back into training when she failed to get in foal and Clarry Conners is confident Satin Shoes still has the necessary desire to add to her six-race win record.

"She's the crankiest she's ever been, she's eating her head off," Conners said.

"She whinnies every day when I walk out of the house because she wants a handful of oats, she loves oats. And yes, I give in."

While Conners has the mare eating out of his hands around the stable, he is banking on rejuvenated jockey Jeff Lloyd coaxing the best out of her at Scone.

Lloyd rides her for the first time under race conditions and to ensure they get along, Conners paired them in a recent barrier trial.

The mare finished second in her heat, as she did 12 months ago when her trainer adopted the same formula before her victory in the 1100-metre sprint.

And while doubt over how well she has returned from retirement still lingers, it may be worth noting her lead-up form is comparable to last year when she finished unplaced in three stakes-grade runs before her Scone triumph.

Conners also confirmed Fare Well would back up from her narrow second to Oxford Poet at Rosehill on Saturday to contest the Denise's Joy Stakes (1100m).

Fare Well was also entered for the Scone Guineas but Conners felt the fillies race shaped as a softer option.

The Guineas boasts a $400,000 purse and is the richest race on Saturday's program.

It has attracted a full field of 16 plus two emergencies with Gai Waterhouse set to have four runners including Woodbine and consistent filly Cosmic Endeavour.
