The fact David Brideoake was considering an interstate Group Three race for Griante this weekend says a lot about her chances of notching a second-straight city win at Caulfield.
Three-year-old Griante runs in The Chase Hotel Handicap for fillies after Brideoake opted not to venture to Scone for a $200,000 stakes race.
Instead the filly can pocket her connections $48,000 prize money and another $21,000 in bonuses if she is successful closer to home on Saturday.
"She's come out of her last start win very well. We were tossing up whether to take her to Scone for the Dark Jewel (Classic) and strive for some black type, but the VOBIS lure will take us to Caulfield," Brideoake, who trains in partnership with David Feek, said.
"She's in good shape. She's carrying a bit of weight but I would expect her to go pretty well."
Griante, a winner of two of her six starts, has topweight of 59kg stepping from 1440m to 1600m and has been installed a $2.60 favourite.
A daughter of Good Journey, Griante defeated the Luke Oliver-trained Jessy Belle by three-quarters of a length last start and Jessy Belle will head to NSW for Saturday's $400,000 Scone Guineas.
While Brideoake was happy to stay in Melbourne, he hasn't completely shut the door on an interstate trip if Griante wins again.
He said the filly was likely to remain in Victoria for another mile race before a break, however a freshen up for The Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) at Ipswich on June 14 could be an option.
"There's a temptation there but we'll just have a look at Saturday and see how it all goes," Brideoake said.
"She's in good shape and you would think she'll go there and put her best foot forward."
