The Queensland Derby dream is alive for young trainer Henry Dwyer and the connections of Sonntag after the ex-Darley galloper booked his trip north with victory at Caulfield.
Dwyer, 30, claimed the biggest win of his fledgling training career when Michael Rodd guided Sonntag to a 1-1/2 length victory in Saturday's ALH Group Handicap (2000m), a race Dwyer said was a test of the gelding's Derby credentials.
"That was the idea before today if he ran well, and I don't think we can change that now," Dwyer said.
"So we'll head to the Derby."
Dwyer is convinced the son of Teofilo will handle the distance rise to 2400m in the Group One classic at Eagle Farm on June 7 after the three-year-old settled fourth, just off the speed, in Saturday's event before racing to the front at the top of the straight.
Sonntag ($8.50) was strong to the line to defeat Khutulun ($8), who appeared unlucky not to finish closer to the winner, with 1-1/4 lengths to Word Of Mouth ($11) third.
"I reckon he could probably sustain that sort of speed he showed the last 600 metres today for another 400, no doubt," Dwyer said.
"He's a very clean-winded horse. He's fit. He's well. I don't see why you wouldn't go up there."
Sonntag was knocked down to Dwyer for $58,000 at a tried horse sale last August having been unplaced in three starts for the Darley operation.
His win at Caulfield was Dwyer's first Saturday city winner since he started out on his own 11 months ago having previously worked for Caulfield trainer Robert Smerdon and prominent owner Lloyd Williams at Macedon Lodge.
Rodd labelled Sonntag an under-rated galloper and believes the horse will be better suited with a quieter ride to run out the 2400m.
"He just needs a more conservative ride and it won't be a problem," Rodd said.
"He's a little trier. It's good for Henry. He's a top young bloke."
Trainer Luke Oliver will look at making Khutulun late entry for the Queensland Oaks after considering the filly unlucky in Saturday's race.
"We'll see how she comes through and if she comes through OK then we'll certainly look at nominating for the Oaks," Oliver said.
