Testarhythm has saved his racing career by easily winning the Listed Ortensia Stakes and giving his jockey Tim Clark a treble on the second day of the Scone carnival.
Testarhythm was having his first start since November on Saturday after only two runs last preparation, both poor efforts.
"He just did not come up but he had quite a few issues with his feet and was a bit funny in the knees," trainer Darren Smith said.
"He has been a great old horse and the owners said to give him a spell and one more preparation and see what happened.
"If he hadn't come up this time we would probably have retired him.
"This horse has been around the stable for forever and is a favourite with all the staff.
"It is so satisfying for everyone to see him come back in such fashion."
Clark, who returned from suspension in Friday, also won the Listed Woodlands Stakes on Shigeru Sendan for Les Bridge and the Listed Denise's Joy Stakes on the David Pfieffer-trained Atmospherical.
"It's good to get a treble after coming back from suspension, it helps to keep my name out there," Clark said.
One of Testarhythm's owners is Smith's father-in-law Bill Ford who has supported the trainer since he first began.
Smith prepared the horse for the race with two trials which included a second at Gosford on a heavy track with Clark aboard.
"It was a really good trial but I was a little worried about his fitness coming into this first-up but Darren has done a great job with him," Clark said.
Testarhythm was in fourth place early when presented with an opening in the straight, he raced away for an easy win over Unanimously and Barbed.
