Forgive And Forget to be aimed at spring

Saturday 24 May 2014, 1:01pm

David Hayes will aim Forgive And Forget towards the Caulfield Guineas after the two-year-old impressed his trainer with a debut win at Flemington.

Forgive And Forget was sent out an $8 chance in Saturday's Victorian Carbine Club Plate (1000m) and surprised Hayes how easily he travelled outside the leader before quickening nicely to defeat odds-on favourite Husson Eagle ($1.90) by three-quarters of a length.

"I knew he was a nice horse. He won a Flemington jump-out by about four lengths and I just thought we'd have a crack at this race up the straight," Hayes said.

"But I really feel he's a going to be better at 1400 metres and a mile (1600m) and Dwayne Dunn confirmed that, saying the best bit of his race was late."

Hayes said he would probably give the gelding a break and train him for the spring, hoping to get to the Guineas.

"He's a miler, we think, but he's kicked off his career really well. We've very happy with that," Hayes said.

Dunn said it was hard to guage the level of Forgive And Forget but is convinced he will be better next season when he steps up slightly in trip.

Favourite Husson Eagle settled in behind the speed and didn't get clear until around the final 200m on the inside but was unable to run down Forgive And Forget.

"He went terrific but he just ran into a nice horse I think," Husson Eagle's rider Michelle Payne said.

The Peter Moody-trained debutant Hi World ($13) came in another half-head away third.
