Connections of three-year-old filly Hot Mama celebrated a city win at Flemington on Saturday in a race where Black Caviar's half-sister Belle Couture failed to figure.
The Robbie Griffiths-trained Hot Mama raced to a neck victory in the Trevor Clarke Handicap (1200m), with apprentice Jye McNeil believing the filly was helped by the experience of racing down the Flemington straight when a last-start fourth.
Belle Couture ($11), a half-sister to Black Caviar and All Too Hard, finished second last in her fourth start and jockey Damian Lane labelled the performance disappointing.
"I trialled her last Friday and she trialled really well, although I didn't let her off the bridle," Lane said.
"They just have to get her home and see if everything's well. There might be something worrying her, I'm not sure.
"She didn't jump that well and got buffeted mid-race but you can't blame the performance on that."
Hot Mama ($20) defeated Scarlet Billows ($7.50) by a neck with favourite I'm Fearsome ($3) running on for third, another length away.
Hot Mama had finished fourth last start against some of the same fillies before notching her third win, and first in the city, from eight starts.
"She learned a lot from the experience down the straight last time, and when the run came today she really fought on well," McNeil said.
