Lonhspresso wins on milestone day for Weir

Saturday 24 May 2014, 5:04pm

Lonhspresso has clinched a trip to Brisbane with a last-to-first win in the Listed Straight Six at Flemington on a day when trainer Darren Weir notched a milestone 200th winner for the season.

Lonhspresso, a Group Two winner as a three-year-old, is set to contest the Dane Ripper Stakes and Group One Tattersall's Tiara in Brisbane after producing a performance connections wanted to see after a first-up defeat.

The four-year-old's win in the $120,000 straight-track sprint was one of five winners on the day for Weir across three tracks which took his season tally in Australia past 200.

Weir had three winners at Donald, one at Flemington and one at Morphettville to take his tally to 201, the first trainer to notch a double century this season.

The trainer wasn't at Flemington to watch Lonhspresso bounce back from a first-up fourth when a well-supported favourite, but managing owner Darren Dance confirmed Queensland carnival aspirations.

"The plan was that she needed to win today if she was to have a shot in Queensland and thankfully she got the job done," Dance said.

"A lot of credit goes to Darren Weir and I thought it was a really smart ride by Michelle Payne, she had it really worked out well.

"She's off to the Dane Ripper and the Tatt's Tiara all being well."

Payne allowed Lonhspresso ($5.50) to find her feet at the back of the field and saved the mare for one crack at them on the outside.

Lonhspresso arrived in time to win in a blanket finish, a long head in front of Le Bonsir ($6) with a nose to Essay Raider ($7) third.

Payne said she was concerned mid-race but stuck to her plan to save the mare for one finishing burst.

"When it was time to go she quickened well and was strong right through the line," Payne said.
