When a horse wins by six lengths on debut it sparks dreams of greater glory.
That is certainly the case for trainer Shea Eden with two-year-old filly Novel Dancer who gets the chance to take another step towards a shot at spring carnival success when she runs at Mornington on Wednesday.
It will be a metropolitan-class test for the daughter of Written Tycoon, who exceeded expectations with her brilliant debut at Echuca early this month.
"We knew she went well and probably had above average ability, although we didn't think she would come out and win by six lengths," Eden said.
Novel Dancer lines up in the Melbourne Truck Centre Handicap (1200m) at Mornington in a race in which a few of her rivals have already been exposed to city racing.
"It's another step up and there's a bit more depth and bit more form in the race and we're really looking forward to it," Eden said.
"We're keen to throw the challenge up to her and hopefully she continues to take that next step. When they win by six lengths it's all impressive but they've still got to take that next step and if she can do that on Wednesday then hopefully she's on the right track come spring time."
Eden will decide after Wednesday whether to send the filly for a winter break or press on to the $130,000 Elvstroem Classic (1300m) at Swan Hill on Friday week, a race won last year by subsequent Group One winner May's Dream.
If Novel Dancer can continue to improve, Eden says races such as the Thousand Guineas in the spring will be a target.
The filly is a Magic Millions graduate so the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas in the summer is another consideration.
"It's fair to say owners and a young trainer like me have got dreams and I can only hope after a six-length win that she can build on that and improve," Eden said.
"And if she does she is going to be an exciting horse come spring time."
