Renovated Ballarat track workload reduced

Tuesday 27 May 2014, 3:28pm

Three race meetings scheduled for Ballarat in the coming months have been moved in a bid to avoid overtaxing the renovated track.

Ballarat will host its first meeting since November on Sunday but Racing Victoria announced meetings in July, August and October have been transferred to other courses.

Cranbourne will host the July 3 and August 28 meetings while Sale will conduct the October 1 fixture.

There are still six race meetings scheduled for Ballarat between now and the end of September.

"Together with the Ballarat Turf Club, we have decided to take a cautious approach and transfer these three meetings to give the track a more conservative racing schedule," Racing Victoria's executive general manager Infrastructure and Club Support, Jamie McGuiness said.

"This revised racing program will ensure race meetings at Ballarat will be conducted on the best surface possible between now and spring."

Ballarat's refurbishment has included resurfacing and reshaping the track.

Ballarat Turf Club chief executive Lachlan McKenzie said by reducing the workload on the track in the months leading up to the spring, it would ensure the track was in perfect condition for meetings such as the Ballarat Cup in November.

Racing Victoria also announced jumps racing at Moe would not take place this year with four jumps races scheduled at the track in July and August removed from the program.

They have been replaced by flat races while four jumps events scheduled for September at Moe will be transferred elsewhere.

Two jumps races set down for Moe last Monday week were scrapped and later transferred to Sandown after jumps jockeys said the resurfaced track needed more time to consolidate before it could safely hold jumps events.
