Cully hoping for jumps success at Sandown

Tuesday 27 May 2014, 6:37pm

After his biggest win at Warrnambool recently, jumps jockey Richard Cully is optimistic about more success at Sandown on Saturday.

Cully is expected to partner exciting prospect Fieldmaster in the Australian Hurdle (3400m) after the Patrick Payne-trained gelding was given 64kg with Galleywood Hurdle winner Gotta Take Care topweight with 69kg.

The 64kg is below the weight range for champion rider Steven Pateman, meaning Cully will take the ride.

Cully won the Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool early this month on the Payne-trained Chaparro.

He has ridden Fieldmaster at Payne's training property and also in a Warrnambool trial and knows the horse well.

Fieldmaster won a restricted hurdle at Sandown earlier this month by 20 lengths with Pateman aboard, stamping himself as a genuine contender for this year's feature hurdle races.

"He was very impressive last start," Cully said.

"I think the way he won flattered him a little bit, but I'm definitely looking forward to riding him.

"He is going to be a great ride and Paddy's horses are flying at the moment."

The Darren Weir-trained Gotta Take Care is expected to take his place in the Australian Hurdle after finishing third on the flat in the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes last Saturday.

Weir said he would work Gotta Take Care up the hill Ballarat on Wednesday morning before confirming he would run.

Gotta Take Care's jumps CV includes his Galleywood Hurdle win and the past two Brendan Drechsler Hurdles at Bendigo.

"I think we'll want every bit of the five kilos (pull in the weights over Gotta Take Care)," Cully said, adding Gotta Take Care was rated 21 points higher.

Fieldmaster had two starts over the hurdles last season in restricted races with Payne planning to target the features this year.

The 13 nominations for the Australian Hurdle includes the Gai Waterhouse-trained pair Valediction and Tenby Lady.

Cully is booked to ride the Payne-trained Krase in the other jumps feature, the $100,000 Australian Steeplechase.

Krase is nominated to back up after his win in a Steeplechase at Casterton on Sunday.
