Curtain closing on career of Iron horse

Wednesday 28 May 2014, 4:20pm

The remarkable journey of Ironstein from four-year-old maiden to million dollar earner will have its next - and possibly final - chapter at Rosehill on Saturday.

Ironstein will be one of two runners for trainer Gerald Ryan in the Eremein Handicap (1800m) as the eight-year-old prepares for life beyond the racetrack.

"If he doesn't go well we could pull up stumps on his career," Ryan said.

"But the plan has been to look at the Caloundra or Grafton Cups before we do that."

Ironstein will line up for his 61st start on Saturday and his past two runs indicate the horse can be a force.

He was doing his best work late when fifth to Kaypers first-up over the Sydney autumn carnival before a midfield finish in the Scone Cup.

Those efforts are comparable to his first two runs last spring which he followed with a narrow second in Listed company over Saturday's track and distance.

"To me, it's a similar pattern," Ryan said.

Ironstein will have blinkers back on for Saturday's race with Ryan hoping the gear change can keep him interested after the horse was left flat-footed last start when the field sprinted at Scone.

The runner-up in that race, Full Of Spirit, will be among his Rosehill rivals as will I'm Imposing who has strong form lines around Saturday's Group Three Doomben winner Zephyron.

Ryan will also saddle up the consistent Senta Desert in the Eremein Handicap while Brazen Moss will attempt to break a frustrating string of seconds in the TAB Early Quaddie Plate (1350m).

The youngster has finished runner-up at all three starts this campaign, prompting Ryan to remove his cross over noseband.

"I'm wondering if it's why he hasn't been beginning well," Ryan said.

"We will see if it makes a difference."

Even if it does it will come too late for Brazen Moss to earn a trip to Brisbane with the colt not among Wednesday's first acceptances for next month's J J Atkins.

However, Ryan could still figure in a major during the winter carnival.

A win by Dothraki in Saturday's Queensland Guineas will cement a Stradbroke Handicap start while Angel Of Mercy, sold for $575,000 to Katsumi Yoshida at the National Broodmare Sale on Wednesday, will remain in training with Ryan and be aimed at the Tatt's Tiara, the final Group One race of the season.
