Connections of Sir Moments will weigh up whether to pay a late entry fee for the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap after his last-stride win in the Queensland Guineas.
Sir Moments is owned by a syndicate managed by Jamie Walter, the brother of champion trainer Guy Walter who died suddenly on May 22.
"The past week or so has been really tough for Jamie and his family and it makes winning this race all that more special," trainer Steven O'Dea said.
"Jamie has been a great supporter of mine for the past five years and we all have the utmost respect for Guy after all he's achieved in racing."
Around 2000 people attended a funeral service for the popular Walter at Warwick Farm racecourse on Friday.
Sir Moments ($17) emerged from the ruck with a flashing finish to pip the Gai Waterhouse-trained Liberty's Choice ($14) in the last stride and win the Group Two race by a half-head.
Ryker ($41), a stablemate of Liberty's Choice, was a short head away third in a gripping finish in which less than half a length covered the first five placegetters.
O'Dea and the owners of Sir Moments will discuss the option of paying a $46,200 late entry for the gelding to back up in next Saturday's Stradbroke.
However, O'Dea's recommendation will be to run the three-year-old against his own age group in the Daybreak Lover (1600m) on the same day.
"We'll have a talk about the Stradbroke but I feel this horse still has a lot of maturing to do," he said.
"Looking at him he's still a big baby and he's only going to get better as he gets older and continues to strengthen."
Jockey Tim Bell said it was only a matter of finding clear running for Sir Moments to win the Guineas.
"It was awkward there for a few strides and the run he took was very skinny for a big horse like him, but once he took it I was confident he'd get there," Bell said.
"He's got a blistering turn of foot and has flown very much under the radar until now."
