Three-year-old chestnut Sir Moments lifted the spirits of the Walter family with a thrilling win in the $350,000 Group II Queensland Guineas (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Just a day after the Walter family said their final goodbyes to trainer Guy Walter at Warwick Farm, Sir Moments captured Proven Thoroughbreds’ biggest win to date with a barnstorming finish.
The Steve O’Dea-trained gelding looked a beaten horse at the 200 metre mark, spotting the leader some three lengths, but a determined ride by Tim Bell saw the horse burst through the smallest of openings to prevail in a tight photo finish. Barely a head separated the five horses stretched across the line.
Saturday’s victory was yet another example of what a remarkable job Steve O’Dea has done for Proven Thoroughbreds. Sir Moments has now won over $400k in prizemoney from just nine starts after he was purchased as a yearling at the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale for just $40k!

Interim trainer Wendy Walter ensured the Blake Shinn-Guy Walter combination rolled on at Goulburn on Monday with Lonhro three-year-old Anecdote thrashing his rivals in the opening race of the day.
It was Wendy's first winner as an independent trainer and fittingly, it came at Goulburn, where Guy dominated for so many years.
As steady rain fell over the Goulburn racetrack, Anecdote and Blake Shinn made their way around to the barriers hoping to make amends for an unlucky defeat on debut. A fortnight ago Anecdote was blocked for a run down the Goulburn straight which resulted in him settling for third place.
On Monday, the son of Lonhro started a dominant odds-on favourite and won accordingly. Shinn was happy to ride the horse off the speed to allow for a clear passage around the outside of the field. Once given full rein, Anecdote quickly hit the front and charged away to score by 4-1/2 lengths.
Stablemate Doubos, raced by the Tait family in the famous red and white cap silks, put in a sound debut to capture a stable quinella.
The win of Anecdote follows Proven Thoroughbreds’ biggest success to date last Saturday when three-year-old chestnut Sir Moments won a thrilling Group II Queensland Guineas (1400m) at Eagle Farm for trainer Steve O’Dea.
Proven Thoroughbreds now has 18 wins for the calendar year, averaging almost a winner every week.
