Tony Parker is looking ahead to the spring and a Geelong Cup start for Freshwater Storm and hopes he can round out this preparation on a good note at Moonee Valley.
The rising six-year-old runs in Saturday's 2040m handicap and his trainer's confidence has been boosted after the gelding's last-start second to emerging stayer St Jean.
Parker, who is based at Geelong, scrapped Ipswich Cup plans for Freshwater Storm and now plans to send him to the paddock after Saturday's race with a view to the spring.
"I would like to have a go at the Geelong Cup," Parker said.
"That's going to be my main aim.
"I've wanted to step him up in distance because he's bred to stay."
Freshwater Storm was beaten two lengths by the Aaron Purcell-trained import St Jean over 2000m at Caulfield on May 17, with St Jean since winning again at Sandown on Saturday over 2400m.
Apprentice Jye McNeil will be reunited with Freshwater Storm on Saturday with his claim taking two kilos off the gelding's 54.5kg.
"He was giving St Jean two-and-a-half kilos last start so it was a good effort," Parker said.
"St Jean has gone on to win again, so there's fairly good form around him."
There are 34 nominations for Saturday's $100,000 race, which is a heat of the Banjo Paterson Series, with Voila Ici topweight with 60kg.
"I would be very confident just looking at the nominations as long as we get a good draw," Parker said.
"He should run in the first two I would think if everything goes right."
Freshwater Storm has won eight of his 29 starts and has claimed two metropolitan victories at Caulfield earlier this season.
The Darren Weir-trained Lonhspresso, last-start winner of the Listed Straight Six, tops the entries in the other $100,000 race at Moonee Valley, a 1200m event for mares.
