Stablemates is a term that does not apply to Robbie Laing's Flemington hopefuls Tristram's Sun and Ali Vital.
The pair spend most of their time in the same paddock at Laing's Cranbourne operation but the trainer says they refuse to acknowledge each other's existence despite having the same sire Yamanin Vital.
"There's three in the same paddock - Ali Vital, Tristram's Sun and Beneficiary - and the other two won't go near Tristram's Son," Laing said.
"Ali Vital and Tristram's Son are both by Yamanin Vital but there must have been some sort of dispute because they ignore each other."
Tristram's Sun and Ali Vital have both posted city wins as part of a strong run of form for the Laing camp, which has resulted in four wins at Sandown in the past three weeks.
Laing's quartet of victories has surprised punters with the winners all starting at double-figure odds and bookies have both Tristram's Son and Ali Vital outside the main fancies in their respective Flemington assignments.
Ali Vital is a $10 chance to claim the LV Lachal Handicap (1800m) while the TAB has assessed Tristram's Son as a $21 shot in the third heat of the VRC Winter Championship Series (1400m).
A third Laing-prepared runner, Beneficiary, is a $61 chance in the Lachal Handicap but the trainer said a firmer Flemington surface would aid the five-year-old.
"Ali Vital's flying and Beneficiary isn't handling wet tracks, which is why he's going to Flemington," Laing said.
"He ran third to Akzar in the autumn so I thought I'd give him a run on a better surface but he's going to the paddock after Saturday."
Darren Gauci will ride Tristram's Sun while apprentices Kayla Nisbet and Jackie Beriman will partner Ali Vital and Beneficiary respectively.
