Jumper starts Laing's Sandown treble

Wednesday 18 June 2014, 4:19pm

Two years spent pestering fellow trainer David Payne has helped provide Cranbourne horseman Robbie Laing with the first leg of a Sandown treble.

Former Sydney galloper Diamond Jim backed up from a strong flat win a week ago to post his first jumps success in the Follow @MRCTrackNews on Twitter Hurdle (3300m).

Laing contacted Payne on numerous occasions hoping to buy Diamond Jim but the horse's owners refused to sell.

However, his perseverance paid off when they eventually sent him to Laing to train for a jumps career.

"David kept saying `the owners love him but if they want to send him down to jump him, I'll let you know'," Laing said.

"David was always interested in my jumping horses and he rang up one afternoon earlier this year and asked if I had room for him."

Diamond Jim finished second at his first start over jumps last month before the six-year-old posted a strong win on the flat shortly after falling in a jumps trial at Cranbourne.

Laing said Diamond Jim's harmless tumble prompted the horse to concentrate on his jumping and resulted in a polished display on Wednesday.

Diamond Jim assumed control of the race at the 800m before the $2 favourite drove clear late to score by six lengths and book himself a shot at in-form jumper Gotta Take Care in the Grand National Hurdle (3900m) at Sandown on July 13.

Laing has plans of winning his second consecutive Group One Victoria Derby with Temps Voleur after the youngster swamped his rivals in the Grand Hotel Frankston Handicap (1000m).

Laing won last year's Derby with Polanski before injury ended his career in the autumn and the trainer will give Temps Voleur a chance to emulate his former stablemate.

"We have always liked him. He was a lovely horse to break in with a big sweeping stride," Laing said.

"I think he has a great future."

Laing will run the Time Thief colt in a Listed race over 1600m at Flemington on July 12 before sending the talented prospect for a short break.

Honest mare Sinhala completed Laing's treble when she finished too well for favourite Dare I Ask in the Sportingbet Best Tote Plus 5% Handicap (1400m).

Dare I Ask set the speed for most of the race before Sinhala overhauled her late under the guidance of apprentice Katelyn Mallyon.
