Trainer Brian Wakefield believes he has found the key to breeding a good two-year-old - give away its mother.
Wakefield bred Denarius ($11), who overcame a veterinary check at the start to score a 1200m win on debut at Doomben on Wednesday.
His late father Brian Wakefield senior bought Denarius's dam Praia Vermelha at the Sydney sales because she was closely related to one of his good mares, Hell For Leather.
"It makes him closely related to the good Brisbane sprinter Adebisi. But Praia Vermelha got knee chips so we sent her to stud," Wakefield said.
"We got nothing much out of her as a broodmare so we kept this bloke and gave her away."
Wakefield joked that he might now have to get the mare back.
Denarius races in the pink and brown colours made famous by champion Albion Park horse Red Seas.
"My wife Natalie's grandfather, Eric Railton, trained Red Seas and owned an Oaks winner in Aspalita," Wakefield said.
"I don't know if Denarius will be that good, but here's hoping.
"I do know one thing, it proves if you want to get a good horse, breed it and then give the mother way."
Apprentice Travis Wolfgram completed a winning double on Denarius having earlier scored on Harmonized Feeling.
"Denarius was still a bit green but I think he will mature into a nice horse," Wolfgram said.
Meanwhile, Kingtantes ($4.60) carried on a family tradition when he won the Goulburn Valley Hcp (1200m).
Kingtantes continues an amazing run of success for the offspring of broodmare Cantantes whose progeny, including Excellantes and Funtantes, have won a total of 27 races between them.
Kingtantes's part owner Bruce Harry hopes the family tradition can continue through the next generation with Funtantes in foal to sire Rothsay.
