Kievann dashes apprentice's double hopes

Saturday 21 June 2014, 3:20pm

Apprentice Katelyn Mallyon had thoughts of a running double when Hard Stride rounded the final bend of his Moonee Valley assignment.

Hard Stride had battled with Kievann for the first 1000m of the Essendon Nissan Handicap (1200m) before the three-year-old slipped clear of his opponent with 200m to run.

Mallyon had won the previous race, the Alternate Railway Handicap (1000m), aboard the $3 favourite Klishina and rival rider Mark Pegus was hard at work, increasing her confidence in Hard Stride's chances of giving her a dual success.

"I thought I had Kievann beaten because Mark was roaring at him to stay in touch on the corner while my bloke was still travelling well," Mallyon said.

"I heard him give the horse a slap with the whip and I thought `beautiful'."

Klishina got home by a short half-head for Mallyon earlier but she was on the losing end of a photo as Kievann ($8.50) rallied late to beat Hard Stride ($4.60) by a half-head.

The result was almost replicated the pair's last meeting with Kievann getting home by a half length over Hard Stride over the same course on June 7.

Kievann joined Stephen Brown's stable last year but has done enough to convince the Flemington trainer he could pay his way in the spring.

"We could put him away for the spring. I don't know, he might have a better race in him," Brown said.

The Darren Weir-trained Street Allure continued the run of close finishes at Moonee Valley when she won the Eurozone Handicap (1200m) by a nose.

Street Allure started as a $4.80 favourite but had to dig deep to beat the plucky Longchamp Belle after the pair raced on the speed for the entire race.

Weir's representative Jeremy Rogers said Street Allure was set to be sold at a mixed racehorse sale but gave her owners cause for rethink when she scored her third successive win.

Street Allure broke her maiden at her seventh outing but has been unbeaten since after posting wins at Bendigo and Sandown.
