Hong Kong-based Tommy Berry continued his amazing record as a fly in-fly out jockey when he won another Group One race on Cosmic Endeavour at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
For the second time in a fortnight, Berry winged into Brisbane and waltzed out with a Group One victory after Cosmic Endeavour ($5) beat Angel of Mercy ($26) by a long neck in the Tattersall's Tiara (1400m).
The brave Avoid Lightning ($10) was a half length back in third place.
Cosmic Endeavour, a $260,000 buy, moved past $1 million in prize money and gave trainer Gai Waterhouse her seventh Group one win of the season.
It was Waterhouse's 125th Group One win which lifted her to third on the all-time list behind her father Tommy Smith and legendary trainer Bart Cummings.
Waterhouse was in England on Saturday but had been in touch with stable staff all week about Cosmic Endeavour's preparation.
Stable representative Adrian Bott said Waterhouse had taken a keen interest in the mare who is owned by her friends and long-time stable clients Don and Judy Kelly.
"Gai has been on the phone with plenty of questions and she will be home this week to plot Cosmic Endeavour's spring carnival," Bott said.
Berry, who will ride in Hong Kong on Sunday, has now ridden Group One winners at his only two appearances in Brisbane.
He said Cosmic Endeavour got cover behind the pace and got clear in the straight when the gap appeared.
Berry has ridden four Group One winners in Australia this season and a further four in Asia.
"Naturally I love coming back here and winning big races. Eagle Farm is becoming one of my favourite tracks," he said.
Jockey Tim Bell, who rode Angel Of Mercy, said the mare's effort was sound.
"I had nothing to take me into the race and I'd love to know what she has run her last 600 metres in as it was heart-breaking," Bell said.
Jockey Tim Clark said Avoid Lightning had given her all and her run was full of merit.
"She couldn't have given any more but if the track was wet they wouldn't have beaten her," he said.
