Wily trainer Bevan Laming is eying another two-mile feature-race success at Eagle Farm with improving stayer The Inventor after his upset win in the Tattersall's Cup on Saturday.
The Inventor ($41) responded to a clever front-running ride by leading apprentice Tegan Harrison to win the Group Three race by a long head from Wish Come True ($4.60) with Pretty Pins ($6) a length away third.
The gelding was backing up from his win in the Provincial Cup (2150m) at Ipswich last Saturday and now will be aimed at the Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm on July 5.
"It would have been three weeks between Ipswich and his next run so I ran him today to get the miles into his legs," Laming said.
"The rain came last night which helped to soften the track and everyone said there was no speed in the race so we decided to go to the front."
The Tattersall's Cup put an exclamation mark on a wonderful winter carnival for Harrison who won the Group Two Victory Stakes aboard Temple Of Boom before Group One second placings on that sprinter in the Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap.
Trainer Peter Moody will give Wish Come True a short break before aiming the entire at the Sydney spring carnival.
"He ran super and it's still all ahead of him," Moody said.
"We'll look at the early spring races with him in Sydney but I reckon next autumn is when we'll see the best of him."
Ryan Wiggins said Pretty Pins pulled hard but is on target for next month's Grafton Cup.
Queensland Oaks winner Tinto, the $3.40 favourite, finished eighth but didn't disappoint jockey Tim Bell.
"It became a sit-and-sprint affair and even though they left her a bit flat-footed I was still happy with the way she took ground off them in the straight," he said.
