Promising Queensland stayer Hi Son is unlikely to be ready for the Grafton Cup but his trainer David Kelly will still attempt one of the Northern Rivers feature races.
The Gold Coast trainer said the South Grafton Cup over 1600 metres on July 6 was a more realistic option than the 2350m of the Listed race four days later.
Hi Son showed his class when second to Kingdoms in the Listed Mercedes Benz Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
The gelding won two 2100m races at Doomben in February then had a break with the winter carnival in mind.
"I don't think we can have him ready. I think the South Grafton Cup on July 6 is more like it," Kelly said.
Hi Son's jockey Tegan Harrison started a suspension on Saturday night but will be back in time for the Grafton carnival.
Harrison also received a severe reprimand for allowing her winning mount, The Inventor, to shift in causing interference to Pretty Pins past the line in Saturday's Tattersall's Cup (2200m).
The Inventor's trainer Bevan Laming will make a decision this week if the five-year-old runs in the Queensland Cup (3200m) on July 5.
The staying feature, one of the few races left in Australia over the Melbourne Cup distance, was The Inventor's original target but his Group Three win may prompt a change of plans.
"It was original mission but now we will have to take a look at weights, etcetera," Laming said.
The Inventor has won three of his past four starts since returning to Queensland after spending the first part of the year racing in country Victoria.
