Jim Byrne realises he is just the caretaker rider on Brace Ali when he seeks his third win in the Caloundra Cup.
Byrne has been one of the form jockeys of the winter carnival and previously won the Cup on Peter Moody's Reggie (2009) and the late Bruce McLachlan's Raw Instinct (2003).
Like Reggie and Raw Instinct, Brave Ali likes to roll along in his races and is a stayer on the rise going into the Caloundra Cup.
Former Tamworth galloper Brave Ali is the staying find of Brisbane racing, winning four races and being an unlucky third in his other start since being transferred to Tony Gollan at Eagle Farm.
The wins have included the Listed Tails Hcp (2128m) and Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m).
In all of those races Brave Ali has been ridden by Tegan Harrison who is currently suspended.
Byrne said he accepted he would be the caretaker rider on Saturday.
"I think it would take a bit to get Tegan off him when she is available. I've watched his races and like his racing style of rolling along in the lead," he said.
Harrison will be back aboard Brave Ali when he tackles the Grafton Cup on July 10.
Byrne is hopeful he can win a feature race double at the Sunshine Coast with the Brisbane hoop steering Alma's Fury in the Listed Glasshouse Mountains Sprint (1400m).
His Glasshouse win aboard Rancho's Coup in 1997 was rated one of Byrne's best rides and he has a soft spot for the race.
Alma's Fury won the Eye Liner Stakes with 59kgs two weeks ago and rises to 59.5kgs against tougher opposition.
"He has won an Apollo Stakes at 1400m so the distance shouldn't worry him," Byrne said.
Brave Ali and Alma's Fury's trainer Tony Gollan will miss the meeting as he won't return to Brisbane until Monday from a honeymoon in the New Zealand snow fields.
