Katelyn Mallyon has her destiny in her own hands in her chase for a second Melbourne apprentices' title.
Mallyon won the prize in 2011/12 but had to sit out the final 10 weeks of that season after suffering fractures in a fall at Flemington, which ultimately sidelined her for eight months, costing her any chance of back-to-back titles.
Mallyon joined Harry Coffey at the top of the Melbourne apprentice standings after notching her 25th win of the season when she booted home Vain Queen at Flemington on Saturday.
Coffey and Mallyon sit one clear of Jye McNeil while Patrick Moloney is another win further back after leading the apprentices' premiership until breaking an ankle in a fall at Flemington in April.
Moloney is unlikely to ride again this season, leaving the leading trio to fight out the title in the final eight meetings of 2013/14.
"To win that title again would be such an achievement," Mallyon said.
Mallyon transferred her indentures to Flemington training partners Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra after an initial three-month loan period earlier this year.
The young jockey said the chance to work at a city stable had helped her improve.
"It's been excellent with Mat and Simon, they give me good support," she said.
"It gives me confidence when I'm riding really nice horses."
Mallyon's title battle also coincides with her bid to outride her claim before she finishes her apprenticeship.
The youngster is due to complete her apprenticeship on August 1 but will add the time she spent out of the saddle last year to her indentured period.
"Personally, I think it's such a big deal to outride my claim. It's such an achievement," she said.
"I still have another 24 or 25 (city) wins to go before I outride my claim but I'm making good progress on it."
