Dane Smith, who combines his work as a barrier attendant with training a small team of horses, savoured his first city win at Sandown on Wednesday.
Get Out Of Town, the horse that gave Smith his first win as a trainer in last year's Avoca Cup, also provided his city milestone on Wednesday in the The Grand Hotel Frankston Hcp (2400m).
Smith started out in racing as an apprentice jockey in Queensland and also spent more than a decade working as a track rider for prominent Melbourne trainer Mick Price.
"I was with Mick for 12 years and rode some good quality horses there including Light Fantastic and Heart Of Dreams," Smith said.
He began training in 2012 and said the breakthrough victory with Get Out Of Town was a big thrill.
"It's taken 18 months and it's really good," he said.
Get Out Of Town was formerly trained by Price and later Byron Cozamanis before Smith purchased the galloper as a tried horse.
