Crossroads race for Brayroan in Qld Cup

Thursday 3 July 2014, 11:34am

A lack of suitable staying races could see Brayroan having his farewell Brisbane run in the Listed Queensland Cup at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Because there are few staying races for open company horses in Brisbane until next year's winter carnival, Brayroan will have limited opportunities to continue to pay his way.

It's a fact of Queensland racing that hasn't escaped trainer Barry Mitchell and jockey Chris Munce.

Munce is Mitchell's son-in-law and they work closely together along with Munce's wife Cathy.

Mitchell and Munce have done a good job with Brayroan, a Sydney-owned galloper, who won the Listed Caloundra Cup last week.

The Grafton Cup next Thursday is an unlikely option for Brayroan, meaning his winter is just about over.

"We don't think Grafton would suit him," Munce said.

"He needs a bigger track with some give in it. Caloundra is ideal for him and Eagle Farm with some rain would also suit."

Munce is almost resigned to Brayroan moving on after Saturday's race.

"He will be very hard to place here and they might take him home," he said.

"But I don't know if he would be up to the better staying races in Sydney or Melbourne.

"If you leave him here it would probably be to set him for next year's Caloundra Cup and 12 months is a long time."

A career in jumps racing in Victoria could be a possibility for the seven-year-old.

"He is by Zabeel and we have had him over the hurdles at home. He takes to them well," Munce said.

The veteran jockey gives Brayroan a real chance in the Queensland Cup, especially if predicted showers arrive.

Munce knows all about winning 3200-metre races at Eagle Farm having won the Brisbane Cups three times when it was run over the marathon trip.

Meanwhile, leading jockey Michael Cahill resumes from suspension on Saturday and has declared himself ready to defend his title against a late charge from Tim Bell.

Cahill looked to have an unbeatable lead in the premiership at the start of the carnival but has been stalled by suspensions.

He has ridden only two metropolitan winners during the past month.

Bell has ridden 12 city winners during the winter carnival to get within two wins of Cahill.
