Mike Moroney has had to be patient with three-year-old Yesterday's Songs but finally gets the chance to unleash the talented gelding in Saturday company at Caulfield.
After a dominant maiden win at his second start in a Sandown midweeker last month, Yesterday's Songs shapes as the horse to beat in the Sportingbet.com.au Handicap (1400m).
Moroney has always known the son of Henrythenaviagtor had his share of talent but said the galloper had taken time to hit his straps.
"He started off in New Zealand and we knew he was pretty smart, that's why we brought him over here," Moroney said.
"We've always had a lot of time for him but he kept going shinsore and was immature so we had to wait a long time for him."
Yesterday's Songs made his debut in a Bendigo maiden in May over 1100m and came from last to finish third.
He then started the $2.20 favourite in a 1300m maiden at Sandown on June 11 and after settling just off the speed, he exploded in the straight to put 5-1/2 lengths on his nearest rival.
"I thought he was pretty impressive," Moroney said.
Yesterday's Songs, who will be ridden by Glen Boss, has firmed from $4.60 with TAB fixed odds to outright favourite at $4.
Moroney appears to have a strong hand at the Caulfield meeting with Yesterday's Songs and Octavia early favourites in their respective races.
His other runners include the resuming African Pulse in the Group Three Sir John Monash Stakes.
Moroney, meanwhile, will send three-year-old Marwood to Seymour on Saturday to resume in a 1000-metre race.
Marwood won his first two starts by more than four lengths at the provincials before being unplaced in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and Caulfield Guineas.
Marwood has had a throat operation since and Moroney said he appeared to have come back well.
"After a wind operation you never know if they will come back as good, but he looked a pretty smart horse so we'll just see how we go," he said.
