In-form jockey Jim Byrne perfectly executed a plan to win the Listed Queensland Cup aboard Sydney stayer Iggy Pop on Saturday.
Byrne scored his fifth black-type victory in the space of a month when Iggy Pop ($10) won by 3-1/2 lengths to Pop N Scotch ($5) with 1-1/2 lengths to Brayroan ($5.50) in Queensland's only 3200m race - run at Eagle Farm.
It continued a run of winter form for Byrne who has now ridden 98-1/2 winners at all tracks this season, his best effort in a decade.
Pre-race talk revolved around on how another Sydneysider Astro Avalanche ($5) would lead the field by a huge margin.
But Bryne decided the way to ride Iggy Pop was to sit on Astro Avalanche and then put on the pressure from the 1000m.
He did just that, attacking Astro Avalanche and then opening up a six-length lead from the 800m and from there never looked like being beaten.
"I looked at Iggy Pop's form and he is a one-paced galloper," Byrne said.
"I knew I couldn't give a horse like Astro Avalanche a big lead and run him down.
Winning trainer John Sargent missed the win because he is in South Africa to watch the Durban July Handicap.
Stable representative Marina Compton said Sargent would be home on Monday and decide Iggy Pop's future.
"The way he worked on Tuesday I knew he would be hard to beat," she said.
Iggy Pop is raced by the Segenhoe Stud syndicate and was formerly trained by John O'Shea.
Jockey Rick McMahon said Pop N Scotch had done a respectable job for a three-year-old in an open staying race.
"The race wasn't really run to suit him," McMahon said.
Jockey Chris Munce said Brayroan did a good job but the hard track and pace of the race had not suited him.
Astro Avalanche started $5 equal favourite but compounded to run a long last.
