Speedy galloper Rocky King will be on trial for a trip to Melbourne when he tackles the longest distance of his career at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Trainer Tom Bourke decided to target the Netball Disney Classic Hcp (1300m) after Rocky King ran second to boom galloper Big Money over 1200m in the Ramornie Handicap on July 9.
"It was probably the run of the race. If he had drawn a barrier he would have gone very close to winning as he was trapped deep for much of the race," Bourke said.
"He is getting stronger with age and I think the 1300 metres won't be beyond him.
"I know he has drawn (near) the outside but he should be able to get across easily enough."
Bourke said Rocky King would head for a spell after Saturday's race following a tough winter campaign.
"But if he races well on Saturday we are looking at Melbourne later this year. There appears to be some spring races which would suit him," Bourke said.
Bourke is keen to have a crack at the 55 second challenge at Moonee Valley, a series of races over 955m.
"A few people have mentioned it to me, they reckon Rocky King would be ideal for the series," Bourke said.
"And there is a car at the end of it, who knows?"
Rocky King is regarded by some as one of the fastest horses out of the barriers to race in Brisbane.
The gelding has won 10 races at distances around 1000m.
Jockey Damian Browne, who returns to Brisbane after riding in Singapore on Sunday, takes over from Tegan Harrison who was suspended for her ride on Rocky King in the Ramornie.
"It is bad luck for Tegan but Damian has won on Rocky King and there is no one better on leaders than him," Bourke said.
Meanwhile, Group One winner Phelan Ready will carry one of the lightest weights of his career when he tries to break a five-year drought from the winner's stall in the Netball Disney Classic.
Trainer Jason McLachlan has snapped up apprentice Luke Tarrant for the ride meaning Phelan Ready will carry 52kg.
"He didn't have much luck last start when midfield in the Glasshouse Mountain Sprint. We have tried everything else so why not a claim?" McLachlan said.
Phelan Ready hasn't won a race since the 2009 Golden Slipper but 42 of his 48 starts have been in black-type races.
