The timing of Kerrin McEvoy couldn't be faulted even if his fitness was questionable as he returned to riding with a Warwick Farm double on Wednesday.
With Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's bloodstock advisor John Ferguson in Australia to announce racing superpower Darley would morph into Godolphin for the 2014-2015 Australian season, McEvoy wasted no time to find his winning touch after a two-week break.
He rode Abduction to victory in the TAB Early Quaddie Handicap and then backed up to bring Copy with a well-timed run in the Pro-Ride Handicap.
But it was obvious to his superiors both winners returned to scale in better shape than the rider.
On a day of formality for the Godolphin and Darley racing concerns, it was left to Sheikh Mohammed's Australian leader Henry Plumptre to add a light-hearted touch.
"You can tell the jockey's been on holidays. He's blowing a bit," Plumptre said as McEvoy returned to scale on Abduction.
Godolphin's Australian forays have been littered with hardluck stories but McEvoy was part of one of its better moments when All The Good won the 2008 Caulfield Cup.
Abduction, backed from $8 to $5, finished best to get the verdict in a three-way finish and appears set for some sort of future in races longer than Wednesday's 1300m event.
By Darley's leading sire Street Cry, the filly is a half-sister to Retrieve who started his racing career in Australia before continuing overseas under the Godolphin banner, earning almost $1 million in stakes.
"She's fairly typical (of the Street Crys) and she's tough. And she looks like she will improve with a bit more distance and you've got to be happy with that," Ferguson said.
Copy also carries a pedigree that will ensure any city win will add to her value and she duly delivered as a well-supported $3.30 favourite over Riva Romantica.
James McDonald rode his 69th city winner for the season to get within one victory of Nash Rawiller in the race for the Sydney jockeys' premiership.
McDonald partnered Felix Bay to victory the Mossman @ Vinery Handicap for trainer Kevin Moses.
