Joe Pride insists there is a strong argument to consider more than the obvious when trying to pinpoint spring talent on Saturday.
In Pride's Rosehill team of seven horses, none will hold more interest than stakes-placed three-year-old Rock Sturdy in the Forum Group Handicap (1200m).
Rock Sturdy will clash with Cluster, the galloper trained by Peter and Paul Snowden who has already been one of the best-supported runners for the Winter Stakes meeting.
In spite of his maiden status, Cluster went around in nearly every big three-year-old race in the spring but his transfer to the Snowdens has so far come with less ambition.
Cluster made a one-act affair of a Kembla Grange race at the end of last month and he has been backed into odds-on to make a successful transition to city class.
It's a betting move that acknowledges Cluster's potential but Pride says his horse can measure up at the start of a campaign expected to build towards 1600-metre races.
"Everyone will be talking about Cluster but my colt is pretty good too," Pride said.
"There are two nice colts in this race.
"It will be good to see where we're at with him on Saturday because I think he's pretty smart."
Rock Sturdy has one win from five starts but he put down a marker for the future with his minor placing behind Gypsy Diamond in the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes at Randwick during the Sydney autumn carnival.
